Tales of Murder Press FAQ
Welcome to the Tales of Murder Press FAQ! Below, you’ll find answers to common questions about our mission, books, and how we bring vintage mysteries back to life. If you don’t see your question here, feel free to reach out—we’d love to hear from you!
1. What is Tales of Murder Press?
We’re a publishing company dedicated to preserving and promoting vintage mysteries from the 1830s through the 1920s. Our carefully curated library features works by early pioneers of the detective and crime fiction genre, from forgotten authors to iconic masters, all beautifully restored for modern readers.
2. What kind of books do you publish?
We specialize in mystery fiction, including detective stories, locked-room puzzles, Gothic mysteries, true crime, and more. Our catalog spans decades of the genre’s origins, with authors like Wilkie Collins, Allan Pinkerton, Sax Rohmer, and others whose works inspired later legends like Conan Doyle, Christie, and Poe.
3. Are the books edited or modernized?
No, we preserve the original texts as closely as possible. While we may clean up formatting errors introduced during digitization, we keep the language, style, and charm of the original works intact.
4. In what formats are your books available?
We offer our books in multiple formats to suit every reader:
- Ebooks (compatible with Kindle and other readers)
- Paperback editions
- Hardcovers, including special editions
- Audiobooks, when possible
5. Where can I buy your books?
Our books are available directly through our website and other online retailers. Visit our Collections page to start browsing and shop your favorites!
6. How do you choose which books to publish?
We focus on works that highlight the depth and diversity of early mystery fiction. This includes iconic titles, rare finds, and overlooked gems that deserve a wider audience. Our goal is to create a library that captures the full range of the genre’s origins.
7. Who were the “pioneers of mystery”?
These are the authors who laid the groundwork for modern mystery fiction. From Wilkie Collins, whose The Woman in White and The Moonstone shaped the detective genre, to Allan Pinkerton’s real-life crime-solving stories, these writers were the first to craft the thrilling puzzles and characters we love today.
8. Can I recommend a book for you to publish?
Absolutely! We’re always open to suggestions. If there’s a vintage mystery you’d love to see revived, let us know. We can’t guarantee we’ll publish it, but we’ll certainly consider it.
9. Do you offer memberships or subscriptions?
We’re currently exploring options for a membership program, The Armchair Detectives Bureau, which would offer exclusive perks like early access to new releases, discounts, and more. Stay tuned for updates!
10. How can I get involved in preserving vintage mysteries?
Spread the word! Share our books with friends, leave reviews, and join our community of readers passionate about classic mysteries. Follow us on social media or subscribe to our newsletter for updates and ways to connect.
11. Do you censor offensive language or content in the books?
No, we do not censor any language or content in our books, including swear words, ethnic slurs, or other elements that may be considered offensive today. These works are preserved as they were originally written, reflecting the context and societal norms of their time.
We believe that hiding or altering the mistakes of history does a disservice to those who experienced it. By presenting these stories authentically, we aim to preserve history, not edit it, and encourage thoughtful reflection on how far we’ve come—and the work that remains.
